i have been eating a vegeterian diet for about 9 months. i have lost some weight but i want to lose about 50 more pounds. i want to lose weight and get toned, not bulk up. i had a knee surgery in the summer and i cant really do any running, i think that would be to hard on my knee.
what are some good eating tips as a vegeterian and exercise tips that you all can offer me that will help me to lose about 50 to 60 pounds and get toned?
also, im a musician and i keep late hours and it can be hard to get heathly foods at 3 in the morning. any advice as to what i should do when its hard to get healthy foods when its late and nothing is open but gas stations and dennys?

hi musicman

exercise: you shuld talk also talk to your physical therapeft (spelling?) about rehabilitating your knee but you can go swimming and cykling wich doesn't burden your knee very mutch.

lose weight: if you want to lose weight you need to eat less then your body needs thats it, eat 500 calories less then you need and that will make you lose weight without making you lose to mutch muscle mass.

eating tips: make food boxes with things like fruitsalad with nuts and raisins, soups and stuff like that

I'm vegetarian and would say that you can get the protein you need from soya and quorn products which are really good for you and avoids animal fats and cholesteral.

Through trying low fat diets I found that the pounds fell away.

I think that avoiding cheese (for me) was one of the major differences - and as a vegetarian that can be hard as it is a usual meat substitute for veggies.

Good Luck

Hey MusicMan

Id like to refer you to these 2 posts I made about exercise (http://thedreamlounge.blogspot.com/2009/04/high-intensity-training-key-to-muscular.html) and nutrition (http://thedreamlounge.blogspot.com/2009/04/absurd-myths-about-nutrition.html).

I was vegetarian for over a year myself actually. Stick with nuts-such as walnuts/almonds/pecans/macadamians- whole eggs, fatty fruits (avocacods/olives), and non starchy veggies.

Try not to eat late at night.

being a tree hugger, vegecrazy is the worst thing to be for building muscle or preserving muscle while losing weight. animal and fish protein are complete proteins. vegetable protein is not. i know they say you mix vegetable protein together to get a complete protein, but it isnt the same. they are weak proteins compared to animal protein. forget worrying about killing of animals. the ecosystem is built on murder. when was the last time you saw a tiger pick a fruit off a tree.at least drink milk. no cows are killed for that. as a matter of fact they get a nice hand job for their products. how you guys go w/o eating shrimp and crabs is beyond me.

I just dont feel comfortable with the killing of animals for food. And actually there is a lot of cruelty that goes anlong with cows being milked. Such as the fact that when cows are impregnated they are done so that way they will produce milk. When thir calfs are born the males are taken away to be made into veal calfs, which is horribly cruel, and the females are rased up to be milk cows. plus when the cows can no longer give milk they are shipped off for slaughter. The milk cows are also pumped full of growth hormones which makes them develop mastitis which is very painful for the cows. They are used and abused their whole lives and i just cant support the cruelty.
I just wanted to tell you where im comming from.

For a healthy vegetarian diet, avoid starchy foods like potatoes and rice (empty carb's that turn straight into fat). Even brown rice, when you do eat it do it small.
It's also okay to eat late at night, but quit eating about 2 hours before bed if there's no protein in the food, 4 hours before bed with protein.

One of the most important things for you though, because you'll be exercising, is to incorporate as much protein into your diet as you can. The rule of thumb is to gain muscle at your full potential while lifting, eat 1g protein for every pound you weigh. 60-80g is enough to keep you from getting sick and weak if you work out heavily.

If you buy two 20# dumbbells you can do nearly any exercise at home you need if you don't want to go to a gym, but I highly recommend gyms. Most will give you a free orientation with a personal trainer and you can ask them anything you want then, you can also ask the staff at the gym anytime. Use your PUA charisma to get free shit more!

I don't know how your knee is right now, but the cardio machines at your gym with a circular motion, like elliptical machines, are non-impact. Bikes don't really burn the calories to be worth it unless you have really high resistance, and that can hurt the knees, but you have to try it to find out.

Thanks for your post man!
One of the other problems that i have is that i cant lift heavy weights with my hands because i have tendinitis in both wrists. Im not looking to bulk up anyway but i am looking to get really toned. I also want to burn body fat.

My wrists have been getting sore, too... but there should be something alternative you can do. I want to start swimming for an hour every other day using the butterfly stroke, as an add-on to my work out. I've heard that's bomb, especially for your abs.

But you're right with not bulking up, a lot of women find it intimidating. Most I know like guys kind of soft.
