View Full Version : Chest hair/undershirts

I am a total newb on fashion, etc and am trying to get this handled.

I hear a lot of people say that you should not wear undershirts with a button down shirt. I also hear/ see a lot of people with their chest shaved.

What is the definitive answer?

I usually wear a grey or white undershirt with my button down shirts a lot, because I think I don't I look that good with my chest/hair showing. Maybe I'm just not used to it. I'm afraid It would just look weirder if I shaved my chest.

What is the best option? If I shave my chest, would you also shave your stomach and armpits? I just don't quite get it.

How do you do it? and how hard/ much work is it to maintain?

Any other thoughts on chest hair are welcome... I am clueless

Thanks for your help everyone.

I'll take a shot at this one.

Richard, I think you posed an excellent question that lingers in the back of our minds. More importantly, its great that you nitpick about your appearance because women notice details.

Regarding your question, I personally dont like to wear shirts underneath any button-down shirt. I think of it as opening a door halfway. Why unbutton the front if youre just going to cover it all up again with a shirt? Also, I dont know what your style is but I unbutton AT LEAST two buttons, usually more. I vaguely recall a Seinfeld epi about this topic and there is good reason why.

Now that we got that covered, WOMEN LOVE CHEST HAIR (and all male hair for that matter)...even though they deny it. From a biological standpoint (the biology of attraction, my best forte), chesthair on a man = sex appeal, period. Everything that makes a man and woman attractive to each other is the exaggerated physical differences. ie: male body hair, female breasts, deep male voices, long female neck...you get the picture.

Also, the human hair has the ability to trap pheromones and other scents much more easily than your epidermis due to its highly porous surface. (tip: spray your cologne on your hair rather than your skin. It lasts longer through the night and remains just as potent) Basically, the extra hair on your chest could trigger attraction in the most primitive of ways, and visually, it sends the signal that you have more androgen which also makes you a more desirable male, biologically.

I personally dont recommend shaving anything other than the hair on your cranium...unless youre an athlete like me and you feel that some hair is, erm, obstructive.

Just because we dont grunt or live in caves anymore doesnt mean these little biological factors are not hard at work in the background. I hope this helps.

I'm glad Savvy covered the chest hair part. He nailed that one Richard, so read it twice, three times if you have to, and don't feel like you need to hide it or shave! It's a part of you, so show it off! I would if I had chest hair :P

As far as fashion goes, find a style that suits you. Despite what others might say, I AM one of those guys that wear t-shirts, or long-sleeved shirts under a button-down shirt! One of my styles for over-the-top peacocking is the use of red and black colours EVERYWHERE!

Red T-shirt, with a short sleeved black button-down shirt over the top, and only the middle two buttons done up. Both of these are tight rather than baggy.(Silver pendants stand out really well on red!) Black trousers, not baggy, but not tight either. Black fluffy top-hat, with a spiral of red fluff winding up! Fingernails painted alternating red and black. Black, red, and white wristbands.

I'll wear this if I want to go all-out on being a magic-man for the night! Red and black card suits, with red and black clothing. (fanning the cards in my hands with red and black nails looks awesome!)

Basically, ANYTHING can look cool, so long as it compliments the rest of your style and fits your body shape. I'm not suggesting you should peacock as much as me :P I'm showing that crazy things can look cool as well. Mystery is living proof of that though!

Happy shopping!

I used to wear a t-shirt underneath my button up shirt, but was told to avoid this from a couple of the gurus as it conveys sexuality if your bare chest is the only thing under your button up shirt.

i really like the response that this threads getting and being as how i have a very hairy chest i thought i'd chime in.

first off..USE WHAT YOU GOT MAN! if you have a hairy chest then fine! So be it. Don't be afraid to look like a man. I don't shave my chest for many reasons:

1. I'm Italian, if I shave my chest my legs and arms are still hairy and it just looks weird..plus it would take a ridiculous amount of time to get rid of all the hair below my eyebrows.

2. The pheromones that Savvy was talking about, I definitely notice the difference and staying power when I spray cologne on my chest versus my hairless neck. It just stays through the night way longer.

3. i know i'm being a broken record but I'm reaffirming whats been said. Women like chest hair. I asked a few girls I was dating in the past if they minded the hair and said that I would try shaving if they asked me to and all but one loved the hair. They even told me things like "i like something to grab onto" and "i like to run my fingers through it" and shockingly enough "its more manly"

so case and point. the hair stays

...however I shave my armpits and the lower back hair. The armpits are bald because it cuts down on sweating because the deodorant directly goes onto the skin instead of getting lost in the hair. Plus nothings more of a turn off when you go to hug a girl and she gets and she gets soaked with your body odor. The back hair goes because...well I don't even have to explain that one really do I?

i use the gillette fusion. its a great 4 bladed razor and i highly recommend it, i used to use the mach 3 by gillette but i would shave before a date and then a feel a stubble a few hours later. with the fusion i shave about once every 2-3 days. (and believe me, thats a lot for a hairy Italian guy like me.

also for undershirts i don't go with the normal cotton very much. i get the solid color nylon/synthetic stretchy shirts that are kinda like under armor. if you have a good physique you really should think about making a switch plus they just feel more comfortable to me.

I have a good story about a girl and chest hair. I often 'trim' my chest hair with clippers... but I don't get rid of it, just tone it down a notch. Usually I will use a 4-guard.

One of the girls I LTRed this last year; when I first met her and was building comfort she would bitch about guys with body hair.

"Oh my god that's so gross."

"Why doesn't he shave that?"

"Eeeeeeew! I hate body hair."

Then, after we had sex the first time I was laying on my back and she was kind of laying half on top of me. Guess what she was doing...

Yep. Running her fingers through my chest hair.

The bottom line: every single word a girl utters about what she is attracted to is rubbish. She might have been logically and socially conditioned to not like body hair, but lucky for us, girls are attracted by emotion not social conditioning.

P.S. I always wear an undershirt under button downs, not because I'm scared to show my chest (and I am a skinny little bastard), but because most of my button down shirts are dry clean only and I like to wear them 2-3 times between cleaning.

Also, a lot of the time I will wear a designer (very preppy) button down, unbuttoned, with something like an affliction t-shirt underneath... and if I'm feeling really saucy, I'll wear a loosely tied tie around my neck (single windsor, of course).

Being hairy can be fun, if you're REALLY hairy, a great opener could be,"PET ME, I fuck for milk bones."

Yeh good thread guys.

I would showcase my chest hair if I had some but I don't know if my puberty is coming late or something lol but I'm 21 now and still have very little hair on upper body.

Lower body however is a different story :D and it kinda looks weird when you've hairy legs but no hair on your arms or chest.... but it's kinda cool and unique too in its own way i guess...

I too find that women are attracted to my chest hair. I wear button down shirts almost exclusively and when I'm feeling it, I get rid of the top couple buttons. That way a little chest hair shows and I'm good to go.

That said, I trim down in length the hair at the very top of my chest so it doesn't pop out when I'm being professional. So far so good.
